Leadership skills is one of the constants we find in many men and women who have been deemed “successful” in society! A person with such skills is sought after by many, especially in the higher stages of hierarchy in the world of business. We even find ourselves adding “Leadership Skills” on our resumes, knowing it is what the employers look for in people!
Some people are natural born leaders, and some have to learn these skills if they want to be considered as leaders, thus giving them a competitive edge!
If we want to have leadership skills, we must understand what “leadership” in itself means!
As defined, leadership is the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common goal!
Colin Powell, the First African American appointed as the U.S. Secretary of State, took on the topic of leadership and established the 13 rules of leadership! These rules are head on with the characteristics found in leaders. In putting these rules into play, for those natural born leaders, and those who are looking to become more like leaders, we become better people in general, and even become better role models to those who look up to us as leaders!
Colin Powell’s 13 Rules Of Leadership
- It ain’t as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
- Get mad, then get over it.
- Avoid having your ego so close to your position that, when your position falls, your ego goes with it.

- Be careful what you choose, you may get it.
- Don’t let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
- You can’t make someone else’s choices. You shouldn’t let someone else make yours.
- Check small things.
- Share credit.
- Remain calm.
- Be kind.
- Have a vision. Be demanding.
- Don’t take counsel of your fears or naysayers. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.
